Project C.H.A.N.C.E. Afterschool Program held a Lights On Afterschool rally on Thursday, October 22 at 3pm.  The rally was one of more than 7,500 such events around the nation that day, the ninth annual Lights On Afterschool celebration, organized by the Afterschool Alliance.  California Governor Arnold Schwarenegger is Chair of Lights On Afterschool again this year.  Speakers in Wilmington called for expanding afterschool opportunities so that every child who needs a program has access to one, and discuss the harm that results from budget cuts and freezes.

Participants in the Lights On Afterschool rally included Jack Markell, Lt. Governor, Matthew Denn, Wilmington Mayor, James Baker, State Senator Harris B. McDowell, County Executive, Christopher Coons, as well as local business leaders, educators and other officials.  The event highlighted three of the significant contributions that afterschool programs make to Wilmington: keeping kids safe and healthy, inspiring them to learn, and relieving working parents of worries about their children’s activities during the afternoon hours.  Hundreds of parents, supporters and community members are expected to attend.

Project C.H.A.N.C.E. opened in 2001 with a 21^st Century Community Learning Centers grant from the U.S. Department of Education.  It now serves 200 children, providing homework assistance, mentoring, tutoring,   clubs in sports, recreation, mathematics, and dozens of other subjects.  The program is an integral part of Red Clay Consolidated School District and a significant number of supporting partners.

Paul Benjamin co-stars in an episode of “In The Heat of the Night”. Carroll O’Connor stars as a white Southern police chief who works with a black detective, played by Howard Rollins Jr. They put aside racial animosity to solve crimes in a Mississippi hamlet. George Brownlow (Paul Benjamin) is being sought by the Police Chief and open fires on the street of this small Mississippi town. Using Your Imagination

You can travel anywhere when you use your imagination because there are no obstacles to prevent you from imagining. With this creative ability, one may invent, design, build, write, and develop.
Through imagination, a child can become very independent and successful. Imagination has a very important role in the development of an individual.

When children are using their imagination, their minds are free and limitless. They are only bound with their experiences.

Imagination is not limited only to seeing pictures in the mind but when one uses their imagination; they use their five senses, also. One may imagine emotions, feelings, tasting, touching, seeing, hearing, etc. It is only limited to the individual and their imagination.

Imagination makes it possible to come into contact with a whole world within the mind. It gives the child or student the ability to look at any situation, and enables one to psychologically explore, search, or investigate the past and the future.

Paul Benjamin is the youngest of twelve children born to Rev. Fair and Rosa Benjamin of Pelion, SC. His father was a Baptist preacher and farmer. He was barely a toddler when his mother died, leaving him with no memory of her being. Upon the passing of his father, still a child, he was brought to Columbia, SC to live with his older brother, David, his wife, Lizzie Mae and their family.

By the time he graduated from C.A. Johnson High, he already knew with a passion that he ultimately wanted to become an actor. This dream would remain his secret for some years for fear that some might laugh at him if he spoke seriously to such a passionate dream at that lime.

Eventually, after attending Benedict College for a year, he moved to New York City where In-studied acting at HB Studio and made his professional stage debut at the NY Shakespeare Festival Public Theater.

Benjamin is most proud to have worked with some of the most talented artists in his profession. For his first co-starring role in the film, “Across 110th Street,” Anthony Ouinn is quoted in the Hollywood Reporter to say that “he considers him to be the most talented actor since Brando.” Other noted films include, “Do the Right Thing,” by Spike Lee; “Hoodlum,” by Bill Duke with Lawrence Fishburne; “Leadbelly,” by Gordon Parks with Roger Mosley; “Escape from Alcatraz,” with Clint Eastwood; “Rosewood,” by John Singleton with Esther Rolle, Ving, Rhames, Don Cheadle and Jon Voight; and “Gideons Trumpet,” with Henrv Fonda.

Noted television productions include, “The Atlanta Child Murders.” with Morgan Freeman, Ruby Dee and James Earl Jones; “I Know Why the Cage Bird Sings,” Maya Angelou’s autobiography with Dianna Carroll; “The Education of Sonny Carson,” with Mary Alice & Horn Clanton; “The Invisible Man,” a PBS Special; “ER;” “Law & Order;” and “In the Heat of the Night” for which the latter two an Emmy nomination was mentioned.

With acknowledgement to his writing, Mayor Tom Bradley presented him with a Commendation from the City of Los Angeles for his play, “Carrier,” for which Paula Kelly won the 1982 NAACP Image Awards for Best Actress. She, along with Mr. Benjamin and the great actor/poet Roscoe Lee Browne, received Certificates of Recognition from Sen. Diane Watson for performances in the same play.
